Let's Grow

Some common questions, and how to ensure your plants are a success.

Caring for your plant

We send planting instructions with your order, but here are some basics to keep in mind:

  • Order only as many plants as you can realistically monitor and water during the growing season.
  • Include several "surefire success" choices, marked with a  .
  • In general, all fruit trees require well drained, fertile soil with good sun exposure.
  • It is critical to mulch and to water weekly when rainfall is less than an inch in the first growing season.
  • Afterwards, as the tree grows and matures, there is mulching, fertilizing, and some pruning.

FAQs

When should I plant my tree?

Fall planting (recommended for USDA zones 6-9) allows your trees to become established over the winter. Roots will grow as long as the ground is not frozen. You can also plant in spring but plants will require more watering over the summer. Zone 5 and colder should plant in spring (but order as soon as you know what you want for best selection) and indicate spring ship date. For help in determining your zone or planting time, feel free to ask us when you order. Your local extension agent or another gardener can also be helpful in determining the best time to plant for your area.

Can I pick up my order if I live nearby?

Yes! We politely request that you email us to set up a pick-up date and time.

How much is shipping? Where can you ship to?

We ship to all 50 states unless otherwise noted on a specific plant variety (but not outside the US, sorry.)

You can get a shipping estimate by using the tool below:

How are the plants shipped?

Plants are shipped via USPS Priority Mail, or FedEx. We sell bareroot trees which means that they are grown for one to two years and then shipped (We have cold storage, so plants are dormant when shipped). You will receive a small, healthy plant that will adapt well to transplanting. If you include an email address you will receive a message from USPS with a tracking number when your order is shipped.

What should I do if there is an issue with my order?

Feel free to email us if you run into any issues. We cannot be responsible for packages that are undeliverable, so please ensure your address is accurate. If a package is visibly damaged upon arrival, please contact USPS first as they require inspection.
